'Spider-Man: Far From Home' - Five Questions From the First Trailer (Trailer Breakdown)

With the past few months offering us our first peeks at what's to come within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, from the solo effort for Brie Larson's Captain Marvel to the next massive Avengers team-up, the new year kicks off with yet another tantalizing look at one of the franchise's other upcoming projects. Seemingly set post-Avengers: Infinity War, as well as after this April's Avengers: Endgame, the events of July's Spider-Man: Far From Home are finally teased in the first trailer for the sequel. From the exploits of Peter Parker (Tom Holland) and his friends abroad on a summer trip to Europe to the inclusion of notable faces like Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury and the cryptic antagonist Mysterio, plenty of questions remain concerning just how this entry plays into the greater picture of the MCU. Here to break down just a few of those questions, I'm running through the first look at where we'll find our webbed hero post-decimation.

How the hell is Peter Parker alive?

Even with the next Avengers feature not releasing until April of this year, the trailer for Far From Home spends no time at all jumping straight to what occurs following the battle against Thanos. With Avengers: Endgame set to delve into just how the dusted superheroes find their way back following the conclusion of Infinity War, the Spider-Man sequel seems to breeze over these details like they never happened. While there's no sign of Peter Parker's quasi-mentor Tony Stark (who didn't meet a fate as dramatic as the web-slinger but nonetheless found himself trapped on the planet Titan), the premise of the film places the young hero's latest adventure after he somehow returns from the dead. As the film details Parker's summer in Europe, including his run-in with a handful of new enemies and allies, there remains the question of how the film might tackle the hero's emotional state following what happened to him in Infinity War.

Where will we find Spider-Man at this point?

The trailer for the film kicks off, to no surprise, with the world welcoming its teen hero from New York City back with open arms. With the events of the upcoming Avengers sequel seemingly placing things nicely back to where they were, Parker's masked alter-ego would likely be among those celebrated. With the first scene in the trailer reassuring audiences that Peter's Aunt May (Marisa Tomei) knows of his secret identity, we see that Spider-Man has garnered much more fame than he began with in 2017's Spider-Man: Homecoming. As the film sends him abroad, his influence looks to grow immensely as new enemies suddenly close in to destroy him.

What are the Elementals?

After arriving in Europe for what was thought to be a relaxing summer vacation, it doesn't take too long before a weary Peter Parker is drawn back into the action. The latest deadly threats to the world and Spider-Man find themselves in what are being called "the Elementals". As their comic-book origins tell us, the extra-dimensional beings include the likes of Hellfire, Hydron, Magnum, and Zephyr, all of whom can manipulate the natural forces of fire, water, earth, and air, respectively. While plenty of mystery still surrounds the film's newest foes, the trailer offers a clear look at just what the creatures can do. What remains to be seen is if, and how, these enemies relate to some of Spidey's other major villains, namely Molten Man, Hydro-Man, and the familiar Sandman. Could these creatures be new interpretations of the Spider-Man foes fans know from the comics?

Who is Mysterio?

The Elementals aren't the only foes Spider-Man crosses paths with in the sequel, however. Following months of casting rumors and leaked plot details from the film, it was finally revealed that actor Jake Gyllenhaal would in fact don the suit of master illusionist Mysterio. One of Spider-Man's oldest villains, dating back to the hero's original Amazing Spider-Man comic run, special effects connoisseur Quentin Beck manifests himself into an effective supervillian after a failed stint as an actor. Despite some leaked concept art of the character before the trailer was released, we get our first peek at Gyllenhaal in action as Mysterio in the final moments of the trailer. Seemingly acting as an ally to the web-slinger, Beck looks to be the leading expert on the cryptic Elementals.

What has Nick Fury been up to all this time?

It's been more than 4 years since we last saw Samuel L. Jackson's eye-patched S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Nick Fury show up in someone's home unbeknownst to them. After sheltering himself in Steve Rogers' Washington, D.C. apartment in the espionage-heavy Captain America: The Winter Solider, we find Fury making another bold entrance, this time interrupting Peter Parker's peaceful European escape. While we might have seen Fury also bite the dust at the hands of Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War, the super spy is back on his feet and raring to bring down the Elementals. Fury's entrance quickly adds an espionage feel to a sequel full of light-hearted hijinks, as we see Peter don a new, sleek stealth suit in the trailer. Whether this means Parker is set to become the newest member of S.H.I.E.L.D., or simply needs to do some reconnaissance on new ally Mysterio, we'll just have to wait and see.

While there is much more to unpack along the way as we shift closer and closer to the release of not only Spider-Man: Far From Home, but Avengers: Endgame as well, here are just a few of the major queries I had on my mind during the trailer. With July's Far From Home seeking to delve further into Peter Parker as much more than just your friendly, neighborhood Spider-Man, the film also looks to set in place an entirely new phase for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While the fates of the more-established members of the Avengers remain a secret, it's comforting to know that at least one hero is still swinging.
